Celebrity riders

Ian Millar and his family are Canadian celebrities, a fact that Hello! Canada magazine has come to realize.

The Perth-area equestrian rider and his children, Jonathon and Amy, will be featured in the May 8 issue of the magazine. They welcomed representatives of the magazine to Millar Brooke Farm in April.

The magazine points out that Hello!’s worldwide mandate is to celebrate celebrities and promote their personal accomplishments. It calls Ian Millar one of Canada’s most treasured icons, and says he showed off his 600-acre estate and discussed his and his children’s love of all things equine, as well as his late wife, Lynn.

The magazine will be on newsstands until May 24.

Ian Millar left for Europe last week to compete in Belgium. He and other Olympic hopefuls Jill Henselwood and Eric Lamaze competed from Thursday to Sunday as individuals, and as a team on Friday.

Canada’s Olympic show-jumping team will be named by June 30. If Millar is named to the team, he will ride the 13-year-old gelding In Style during competition.

Golf for charity

Golfers who like to benefit charity while whacking that little white ball can get in on Golf for Kids at Mapleview Golf and Country Club on Saturday, June 14.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lanark County benefits from the tournament. A shotgun start will begin the event at 8 a.m.

Individuals and businesses can also sponsor holes for $100. For more information on the tournament or hole sponsorship, call Big Brothers Big Sisters at 613-283-0570 or e-mail inquiries.bbbslan@cogeco.net.

You’re out!

Umpires have one of the best views of the ball game – and they have to watch closely to make the right calls.

If you’re interested in becoming an umpire, the Eastern Ontario Umpires Association wants men and women 18 years and over to officiate fast-pitch and slo-pitch softball. The organization is affiliated with Softball Canada, Softball Ontario, Slo-Pitch Ontario and the National Softball Association.

For more information, call Stuart at 613-744-3967 or Dave at 613-830-8350.
